Somerset Trail 3/1/09

Well it was on, then it was off, then it was on again, then off, so a bunch of us turned up anyway to greet the New Year with a dawdle around this great track.  Good to see the new year start with our usual clockwise precision and logistical expertise such that half of us thought the run was cancelled while the other half, probably the slow learners, thought it was on.

Speaking of slow learners and clockwork precision, Wendy decided she'd set her own trail after missing a left off the track despite having run the proper course a few times before today.  While she took the scenic tour, Dave S, Steve H, Macca and Parso continued on to the lookout.  Wendy hadn't showed after 10 minutes so it was decided to run back to the start along the same trail but when we still didn't cross paths and a walker we passed going out said she hadn't seen her we began to worry, well almost.  At one point we split up to check out all local roads before meeting back at the gantry.

Still no sign so a couple headed off by car to check further afield while Macca and Parso stayed at base camp in case she turned up.  When the car returned without Wendy we really did start to get concerned as it had been about 2 and a half hours now.  Just as we turned on mobiles checking for coverage before calling someone in authority, out of the woods walked the wayward Wendy looking a little sheepish - she is a Kiwi you know.

Back to Maccas for good coffee and some music from the Woodford Folk Festival.  Maybe a good thing to remember on this trail is if you haven't seen any track markers or arrows for a while, stop and retrace your steps.  Better to turnaround sooner rather than later and risk getting totally bamboozled.  Wendy will be there at the next run so whatever you do stay in front of her!
