This is a new event on the running calendar. Each loop is 10.7ks and you can do 1, 3 or 5 of them. The course is relatively flat and doesn't involve a hike up to the lookout either. It does however include lengthy sandy stretches and, after recent rains, plenty of mud and puddles.
Bruce Cook helped out with the event but found time to place 3rd in the 10.7k event (47:48). Tash (1:16:06) from Team Haze also finished the single loop and managed to run all the way and stay relatively mud free.
Peter McK (3:14:56) and Bill (3:24:52) went round 3 times as did Anja (3:24:39) who whipped Bill into a running frenzy along the straight forest trail section ensuring he'd get his best time. But she couldn't let him win of course so finished seconds in front. Peter looked shattered at the end but ran very well to finish up the table as conditions started to heat up some. Geoff W (3:56:03) was also helping out on the day and finished the 32k course also in good time considering he's been busy organising other events and neglecting training.
In the 5 loop event Parso (5:33:55) and Captain Haze (5:55:11) stepped up, each hoping that they could get around before being lapped by Don Wallace. Haze made it more difficult for himself by falling over then heading in the wrong direction after getting up, thereby running an extra 3 or 4 ks before surprising timekeepers back at the start who quipped "That was a fast loop mate!".
With 4ks to go in the 4th loop Parso felt the whoosh as Donnie rushed past on his way to the finish of his 5th lap. Looking at the results Don (4:04:40) more or less ran each lap consistently or a little faster than the previous one, then decided he'd had enough and finished off with a 47 minute blinder. Dave Schuett was part of a Kokoda Challenge team a few years ago with Parso and his running has improved out of sight in recent years. Parso took quite a few nervous looks over the shoulder and finished marginally in front - this time round. Dave, like Francis, canes any downhill or technical section. Hope to catch up with Dave at Kokoda this year.
Speaking of which this event provided good training for the Challenge as will Washpool 50k in 2 weeks, then the Mt Mee Classic over the marathon distance.
But look out for Wildhorse next year, it's bound to get more popular in its loop format. Congratulations to TRAQ and organiser Alun Davies for a great event.
